Greg Barme, MD

Dr. Greg Barme joins Golden Gate Urology after 15 years in private community practice in Newport Beach. California. He served on the Medical Executive Committee and as the Chairman of Urology at Hoag Memorial Hospital, a large, community based medical center in Newport Beach. Dr. Barme grew up in Los Angeles and went to U.C. Berkeley for his one undergraduate degree. He then went to medical school at U.C. San Diego and did his Residency in Urology at Yale University. He then settled in Southern California with his wife and two kids. He spends much of his free time outdoors, skiing, hiking, and camping with his family and friends. An avid piano player, he is a fan of all types of music and arts. He loves providing outstanding and comprehensive urologic care to his patients. He practices general urology, with special interest in kidney stones, urologic cancers, infertility, vasectomies (he has performed over 2000), and urinary and sexual issues facing the aging population. He looks forward to relocating to the East Bay with his family and meeting you soon.

Robert Q. Hoang, MD

Dr. Robert Q. Hoang received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry from University of Texas. He obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He completed urology residency at University of Texas Medical School – MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Board certified in urology, Dr. Hoang has been in private-practice since 2000.

Dr. Hoang’s practice covers Adult & Pediatric Urology, including BPH (enlarged prostate), Urinary (Voiding) Dysfunction, Female and Male Urinary Incontinence (leakage), and Kidney Stones treatment and prevention. He evaluates and treats urologic cancers (prostate, bladder, kidneys, testicles), and is proficient in laparoscopic and Da Vinci robotic surgery.

Dr. Hoang has a life-long commitment to volunteerism locally and abroad, serving the basic needs of our elderly and providing medical/surgical care in low-resource areas.

Wenwu Jin, MD, PhD

Dr. Jin received B.S. degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. Dr. Jin obtained Ph.D. degree in biophysics and bioengineering, and M.D. degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed urology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Board certified in urology, Dr. Jin has been practicing in San Francisco since 2009.

Dr. Jin’s practice covers male and female adult urology, including urologic cancers, kidney stone diseases, ureteral obstruction, prostate diseases, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. Dr. Jin specializes in robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and other minimally invasive procedures. He is an expert in advanced robotic surgery to treat patients with prostate cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer and ureteral obstruction. He performs minimally invasive endoscopic surgery to patients with complex kidney stone diseases. He also performs in-office procedures, such as UroLift (prostatic urethral lift) and TUNA (Trans Urethral Needle Ablation of the prostate) for benign prostate enlargement, and no-scalpel vasectomy.

Dr. David Kornguth

Dr. David Kornguth is the Radiation Oncology Chief of Golden Gate Cancer Center and leads an experienced team. We focus on your success at Golden Gate Cancer Center. Dr. Kornguth trained at MD Anderson cancer Center in Houston Texas and joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor before moving to California.

“I believe that patients have to understand the disease process and be part of the decision making team. The old medical model was more of a paternalistic “doctors knows best” attitude that always bothered me. Patients deserve better than that.”

Chi Lee, MD

Dr. Lee received his undergraduate degree at Princeton University in 1985 and attended medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he received his medical degree in 1989. After completing a 2-year residency in general surgery and a 4- year residency in urology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York, he pursued a 2-year fellowship in pediatric urology at the Schneider Children’s Hospital (now known as Cohen Children’s Medical Center) in New York.

Board certified in urology, Dr. Lee has been practicing in Berkeley since 1997. He offers a full complement of adult urologic services such as the treatment of benign and malignant prostate disease, bladder cancer, stone disease, male infertility, and vasectomy. He specializes in the treatment of urologic conditions in children such as hypospadias, vesicoureteral reflux, undescended testes, inguinal hernias, hydroceles, and renal obstruction.

Dr. Lee is a member of the American Urological Association, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He had formerly served as the chief of pediatric urology at Children’s Hospital Oakland and has been a Board Member of the Regional Center ofthe East Bay. He is proficient in Cantonese and speaks some Mandarin.

Andrew Pienkny, MD

Dr. Pienkny is a transplanted New Yorker who received his undergraduate degree in psychology from Brown University, and then went on to Harvard Medical School where he received his M.D. in 1994. He completed his urology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, before settling in the Bay Area in 2000. Dr. Pienkny is Board Certified in urology, and practices general adult urology with a special interest in voiding dysfunction, incontinence and vasectomies. He also performs minimally invasive surgeries for enlarged prostates, and kidney stones.

Dr. Pienkny has been a past member of the medicare committee for Alta Bates Medical Group. He is an active member of both the American Urological Society as well as the California Urological Society.

When he is not at work, Dr. Pienkny can often be found jogging along the Iron Horse Trail, snowboarding in Tahoe, or taking in a baseball game with his teenage son Max. He and his wife Christin live in Alamo with their son, where they are also active members of Congregation B’nai Tikvah.

Daniel Oberlin, MD

Daniel T. Oberlin, MD is a fellowship-trained Board Certified Urologist in the East Bay of San Francisco (Berkeley, Oakland). He treats all types of urological conditions in men and women with a focus on minimally invasive urologic oncology. Dr. Oberlin completed his undergraduate degree with honors from Dartmouth College. He went on to Case Western Reserve University for his medical degree where he was awarded research grants from the NIH to study kidney transplantation at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Oberlin completed his residency at Northwestern University and achieved accolades including winning manuscripts and presentations at national meetings as well as first place awards during research presentations. His research attracted national attention in prostate cancer care, kidney stone treatment, and practice patterns in urology.

Dr. Oberlin completed a fellowship in oncology and robotic surgery at the University of Southern California. He performed hundreds of robotic surgeries while at the highest volume robotics program on the west coast with internationally recognized leader in the field of robotics. Dr. Oberlin continues to contribute to academic urology publishing in major urologic journals and currently serves as peer-reviewer for several leading journals.

Dan is the proud father of a beautiful daughter and lives in the East Bay. His interests outside of urology include fly fishing, skiing, hiking, and traveling. Dan and his wife Pisey look forward to being active members of the Berkeley and Oakland communities.

Rodman Rogers, MD

Dr. Rogers’ practice focuses on the clinical application of new technology. This includes minimally-invasive treatments for kidney, bladder and prostate disorders. He has particular interest in treatments for erectile dysfunction, voiding symptoms and urinary incontinence in both men and women.

He specializes in laparoscopic and/or robotic surgery for kidney and bladder and prostate cancer, and telescopic surgery (“endourology”) for benign prostate enlargement and urinary stones. He performs the Urolift procedure for prostate obstruction, the no-scalpel vasectomy, and offers in-office sedation for procedures. His practice emphasizes preventive medicine and non-surgical treatment for voiding symptoms, kidney stones, sexual dysfunction and urologic malignancies where appropriate.

He is the Vice Chairman of the Board of the Bay Area Physicians for Human Rights, a member of the CPMC Cancer Committee, CPMC Robotic Surgery Program Committee, Medical Executive Committee of the Presidio Surgery Center and has been on the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Medical Society.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Rogers is an avid swimmer on the San Francisco Tsunami Masters Swim Team and participates in open water swim events in the San Francisco Bay. He also enjoys snow skiing, scuba diving, hiking and kite boarding.

Alvaro Santamaria, MD

Dr. Al Santamaria is a fellowship-trained urologist specializing in male sexual health and reproductive medicine who practices in the San Francisco Bay Area. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he graduated from UCSD with a degree in Bioengineering with a focus in biotechnology and worked in biotech before attending medical school at UCLA. He completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at UCLA, where he also spent a year conducting research on male sexual health, fertility, and access to urologic care. Following residency, he further specialized in Male Sexual Health and Reproductive Medicine at the University of Washington where he trained under internationally recognized experts in the field.

Dr. Santamaria is a recognized leader in Men’s Health and Fertility, having authored numerous research manuscripts, articles, book chapters, and surgical videos. He has presented cutting-edge research at leading conferences, including the Sexual Medicine Society of North America, the American Urological Association, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. In clinical practice, he is passionate about patient-centered care and is skilled in treating all adult urologic conditions, with subspecialized expertise in erectile dysfunction, Peyronie’s disease, testosterone deficiency, male infertility, and male urinary incontinence. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, running, hiking, and cooking.

Danielle Shanahan, PA-C

Dani is a Bay Area transplant originally from Baltimore Maryland, where she worked 11 years for the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Stevenson University in Maryland. She then moved to California to further her education and soon after completed her Master of Physician Assistant at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland. She is currently a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Urological Association. Her interest in urology includes but is not limited to Urological urgent care, men’s bone health, pessary placement and prolapse care, overall urological health, and wellness for all patients in a compassionate and caring environment. When she is not working, Dani’s interests include exploring California beaches, wineries, and everything in between, Baltimore sports teams (Go Ravens and Orioles!), travelling and fostering Bay Area rescue dogs.

Ira Sharlip, MD

Ira D. Sharlip, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Urology at the University of California at San Francisco. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned B.A. and M.D. degrees. He did his postgraduate medical training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California at San Francisco, and at the Middlesex Hospital in London, England. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and in Urology. He practices clinical urology and urological surgery in San Francisco.

Dr. Sharlip is a urological surgeon and an internationally recognized authority on urological problems of the male sexual and reproductive systems. Author of over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and/or book chapters, he lectures extensively on these and other urological subjects. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Sexual Medicine. He serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Fertility and Sterility, Urology, European Urology and other medical journals. He belongs to more than 15 professional societies and serves as an officer and/or committee member in several of them.

He is Past President of the International Society for Sexual Medicine and founder and Past-President of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America. He has served the American Urological Association (AUA) as a member or chairman of several committees including the Practice Guidelines Committee and the Public Media Committee. Currently, he chairs the AUA’s Male Circumcision Task Force. This Task Force is developing a pool of qualified volunteer surgeons who will be available to perform and teach male circumcision in Africa. The Task force is working with the World Health Organization and other international health authorities to enhance HIV prevention services in areas where there is a high prevalence of HIV infection and a low prevalence of male circumcision.

In the field of male infertility, Dr. Sharlip is a leading authority on vasectomy, vasectomy reversal and other types of microsurgical reconstruction of the male reproductive system. He has been Co-Chairman of the Male Infertility Best Practice Policy Committee of the American Urological Association. Currently, he chairs the Vasectomy Guideline Committee of the American Urological Association. This committee is writing an evidence-based document which will identify optimum preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative practices in vasectomy. The document will be available in May 2012.

Dr. Sharlip served as Senior Flight Surgeon in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict. He is a decorated veteran of dozens of combat missions there. He has consulted in hospitals throughout the world and he has worked as a volunteer physician and surgeon in Kenya, Thailand, and Vietnam. In February 2004, he served as the urologist on a team of 30 doctors from the United States which traveled to Baghdad to assess healthcare needs in Iraq.

Allison Sih, MD

Allison Sih, MD was born and raised in San Jose, CA, and graduated with honors from USC. She received her medical degree from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sih completed a general surgery internship and Urology residency at Temple University Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. She then completed a fellowship in reconstructive urology and cancer survivorship with a focus on women’s health at City of Hope in southern California. Dr. Sih trained with internationally-recognized experts in robotic and minimally-invasive surgery. She has presented at national conferences and won first-place awards for her research.

Dr. Sih is happy to serve the Bay Area community as part of the team of medical experts at Golden Gate Urology. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the patient-centered approach to healthcare. Dr. Sih is well-versed in treating all adult urologic conditions, including enlarged prostate, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, female pelvic organ prolapse, and urinary tract infections. She also has significant experience in robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System. She is passionate about improving her patient’s quality of life by developing treatment plans based on each patient’s unique condition, lifestyle, and goals. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, scuba diving, and hiking.

Yevgeniy Veltman, MD

Yevgeniy (aka Gene) Veltman, MD grew up in San Francisco and is proud to serve and practice Urology in the Bay Area community where he grew up.

Dr. Veltman received his undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley and went on to medical school at the University of Miami where he received his medical degree and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Veltman completed his Urology residency training at the University of Pennsylvania and was thrilled to return home to the Bay Area to practice.

Dr. Veltman is Board Certified in Urology, treats all types of Urologic conditions in men and women and practices general adult Urology. He has a special interest in BPH/prostate enlargement, kidney stones, erectile dysfunction, vasectomies and voiding dysfunction.

Gene is a proud father of two beautiful girls and enjoys swimming, hiking and spending time with his family. His grandmother was a prominent physician in the former Soviet Union and her influence has led him to develop into a compassionate and dedicated physician who enjoys building long-lasting relationships with his patients and making a difference in their lives. He has never forgotten his roots as an immigrant and is thrilled each day to live out his ‘American Dream.’

Qingwei Robert Yan, MD

BACKGROUND:

Dr. Yan was born in Shanghai, China. Besides English, he is fluent in several dialects of Chinese including Cantonese, Mandarin, and Shanghainese. After graduating summa cum laude from the Boston University undergraduate program, and then M.D. from Boston University School of Medicine, he completed his internship and residency training in urology at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. He has been providing urologic services to patients for over 13 years. He is the former Chief of Urology at the Summit Campus of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland. He is Board Certified in adult and pediatric urology, and is a member of the American Urological Association and California Medical Association. He also served as a board member of the Bay Area Tumor Institute for 8 years.

PRACTICE AREAS:

Dr. Yan’s practice encompasses all facets of urology. He evaluates and manages a variety of urinary and sexual problems including kidney stones, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and various urological cancers. He treats both men and women.

Dr. Yan performs a variety of urologic surgical procedures from minimally invasive kinds to more extensive endeavors. He has been performing robotic surgeries for kidney and prostate cancers, reconstructive surgeries, endoscopic surgeries for benign prostate conditions, bladder tumors, and ureteral stones, percutaneous surgeries for large kidney stones, as well as corrective surgeries for urinary incontinence and erectile problems. He performs endoscopic evaluations of the bladder, prostate evaluations and biopsies with ultrasound, vasectomy, and minor urological excisional surgeries in his office under local anesthesia.

PRACTICE PHILOSOPHY:

Dr. Yan actively listens to his patients, talking, educating and discussing with them all urological problems that concern and bother them. He believes in giving patients options of treatments, and empowering the patients in the decision making of their own health and health care issues. He believes that the optimal care for the patient is one that is provided on a partnership basis between the doctor and the patient. He strives to provide excellent services to patients while expecting responsible interest and cooperation from his patients in their own well-being and care.
